Employee training is not only beneficial to the individual, but also to YOU – the business owner. It will help your company continue running effectively.
When you hire people who already have skills and qualifications, you should be investing in them by providing adequate training and development. No matter how efficient they are, they will only get better if constantly trained.
Feeling reluctant to invest in employee training? We understand why!
Employee development costs time, resources and money, especially as you think you can’t stop the employee from walking out of the company at any time. It can be very frustrating when you spend time, money and effort training employees only for them to take their new-found skills to another employer.
But do you know training could guarantee loyalty to the company? Employees who have access to constant development feel a sense of belonging. They will feel the company cares about their growth and this inspires loyalty. However, if you still can’t shake off the feeling they will leave, consider making them sign an agreement whereby they will have to pay back the fees if they leave before a specified time (this should be stipulated in the contract of employment).
Here are few tips to help you run an effective training program for your employees:
1. Find out what training your employees need
What are the skills that need enhancing? Where is the knowledge gap?
Assess existing skills of all employees at all levels of the business. This will help you identify what skills are needed to take the business to the next level. You can send forms across to get employees’ input, let them identify the knowledge, skills and abilities that will enhance their ability to perform on the job
2. Plan
After identifying your training needs, start making plans. You should decide whether the training will be done in-house or by a third party (it is usually better to do both). Find out the cost of the training, how your business would benefit from it, and how much time is needed.

3. Carry out post-training evaluations
If you want to determine how effective the training program was on employees’ performance, then evaluation is necessary. The evaluation should not be less than three months after the training session, this will give employees time to adjust and implement new skills acquired.
It should measure the impact all training has on the employee’s performance.
